As we’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, home learning isn’t the same as school.
To make a success of home learning, we shouldn’t try to replicate the school day at home. If we choose to have a timetable, it should be very different to a school timetable: learning at home will more flexible, it will take less time, and it can be built around our children’s passions and interests.
If we are setting up a space for learning, it will be very different to a classroom. It might include a desk to work at, but it could also include the kitchen for cooking, the garden for outdoor activities, or the entire bedroom floor for covering with Lego (in our house, at least).
But, while we’re not trying to recreate school, we might still want our children’s learning to keep ticking over while they’re at home. So, what would they be learning if they were still at school?
Ideas from the curriculum
The Oxford Owl site has handy curriculum guides organised by school year group (and by age if you’re not in England), outlining the curriculum and key milestones in each year group:
- Year 1 (age 5–6)
- Year 2 (age 6–7)
- Year 3 (age 7–8)
- Year 4 (age 8–9)
- Year 5 (age 9–10)
- Year 6 (age 10–11)
For each year group, there are ideas for learning, activities to do, and resources to explore.
If you come across something that is unfamiliar, then there are glossaries for English and maths, as well as a whole bank of videos covering different aspects of the curriculum. These are also handy if an activity comes home from school that needs some explanation.
Of course, it might be that the activities and learning you’re planning to do while the children are at home are very different to the national curriculum: cooking, outdoor learning, or writing stories about the things they love. You’ll know what’s best for your children and your situation.
And if you do want to look at the national curriculum, remember that you don’t need to cover all of it at home over the next few weeks. With the world as it is at the moment, children need us to be parents first and teachers second.
