The Story Spinner stories

Ages 4–5

Bat Dance

A baby bat, freezing in the rafters of an old church, asks various characters to help him learn to dance so he can keep warm. Download teaching notes here.

A farmer in Ghana is about to harvest a yam when it speaks to him. He runs away, but discovers it’s not the only talking object. Download teaching notes here.

Ages 5–7

Little Red Riding Hood

A girl meets a wolf on her way to Granny’s cottage. The wolf gets to Granny’s first, and plans to eat the girl, but a woodcutter saves her. Download teaching notes here.

Clever Gretchen

When Gretchen’s baby brother is kidnapped by Baba Yaga, Gretchen has to defeat the witch in order to rescue him. Download teaching notes here.

Ages 7–9

Anancie and the Drum of Common Sense

Anancie collects common sense in his drum. When he realizes he lacks common sense himself, he smashes the drum and releases it. Download teaching notes here here.

Mr Wah

Chung-i-Ling’s servant, Mr Wah, tells her stories. She traps them in a box, where they plot revenge, and Mr Wah has to save her. Download teaching notes here.

Ages 9–11

The King’s New Garden

The king wants a garden as beautiful as the Queen of Sheba’s. His gardener tries his best, but eventually he has to let nature take its course. Download teaching notes here.

Persephone

Hades, Lord of the Underworld, kidnaps Persephone. Zeus negotiates and they agree she will stay in the Underworld for six months a year. Download teaching notes here.
